In 2016, NOMS Wales awarded Novus Cambria the contract to deliver Learning and Skills at HMP Berwyn in Wrexham.
HMP Berwyn is a new, state-of-the-art prison, with the rehabilitation and employment of offenders at its heart and a capacity of 2,106. Learners can develop a host of new skills and study towards career-relevant qualifications.
Colourful environments with art and inspirational messages have been designed to help learners inside the custom-built prison, think about the future and orientate them towards a crime-free life. Novus Cambria began delivering its education provision at the establishment in 2017 and set out a clear, recognisable culture where innovative learning opportunities are embedded across the prison environment and the men are encouraged and assisted to prepare for a fresh start in life.
The prison has a central place in the community, bringing jobs and opportunities to the region, holding prisoners closer to home and helping them to resettle. With rehabilitation and employability skills playing a pivotal role in the education provision, Novus Cambria works closely with employers to establish local employment needs.
The delivery of high quality Learning & Skills includes assessment, engagement, qualifications and employment outcomes. The innovative delivery at HMP Berwyn includes in-cell, on-wing learning, interactive learning tools and digital literacy. This is part of the vision of a learning establishment, where learning opportunities are embedded across the prison environment and not limited to the classroom.
